It didn’t take long for tiny Macau, officially a “Special Administrative Region of China” — whatever that is — to overtake Las Vegas as the biggest gambling city in the world. The real shame is how many of those 20 million who hit the tables so far this year didn’t get a chance to see the real Macau, the first and last European colony in China. Given its history, it’s no surprise how much there it to see there, from the ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral built back in 1598, to Mount Fortress, the sprawling fort with amazing views of the casino cityscape (pretend to blow up the Sands with a cannon!). There’s plenty more to see, especially good to know after you blow your travel budget at the craps table before lunch.
