Where To Find The Best Travel Videos On The Web

Thursday, January 8, 2009

A little while back I started a new travel video group on Vimeo (in my opinion the best video-sharing site on the web) and called it, appropriately enough: Travel Videos (not to be confused with the other travel video group on Vimeo named HD Travel Videos; I’m trying to be a little more inclusive).

I was taking a look through the group the other day after not having done so for about a month, and I have to say, I’m astounded by the quality of videos people have been posting. I’m almost always checking up on the sites devoted to travel videos (Travelistic, TripFilms, CompulsiveTraveler, YouTubeTravel) and though you can find some good stuff there, there’s nothing quite like the variety and quality that I’m seeing in this group.

So take a look yourself, and I’m going to post a few of my favorite videos that I’ve come across over the last month to give you a taste of what’s out there.

I can only imagine how long it took to Eric to cobble all these tiny clips together to create this unforgettable look at Japan. Warning to those prone to seizures: this is probably not for you.

This hypnotic video taken from a cross-country trip across the U.S. on train and set to some original prose by the director truly shows the power of word to create a mood and to transport the listener to another world.

I swear I could watch this video over and over again all day, especially when I look outside at the gloomy, gray cloud cover that is New York in the winter. Check out the coolest fish that I’ve ever seen at 1:34 and 1:57, and I’m not even sure what that thing is at 1:15, but I’m pretty sure it’s moving and I’m pretty sure I’m both frightened and awed at the same time.
