These days, it’s more than likely that you’re going to be around many other travelers¬† when you’re in Central and South America. But as Anna points out in this article, Guatemala offers a rare opportunity to see and experience a culture that “remains remarkably untouched by modernity.”

In the South you can visit Tikal, one of the largest Mayan ruins in the region; in the highlands you can visit small villages and see women wearing traditionally-colored garments distinctive to their town; and because any trip deserves a little time spent in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, head to Antigua, the old colonial town with its picturesque Spanish-influenced buildings and its very own Central Park — like NYC, minus the hot dog vendors.
