Wednesday Travel Deals (Cheap Europe, St. Thomas, Beijing)

Fly Cheap To Europe This Winter: Lufthansa’s offering deep discounts to Europe this winter if you book by the 12th (less than half a fortnight away — hurry!). Some examples include San Diego to Madrid for $551 and New York to Frankfurt for $611.

St. Thomas 4-Star Hotel For $159/night: Though not as cheap as camping the Caribbean (as we discussed a few weeks back), and though I’m mostly opposed to blowing your travel budget on sleeping arrangements, but when a hotel drops their prices over $285 it’s hard to resist.

SIDENOTE: A quick look at the the hotel site’s FAQ section reveals this little tidbit about the hotel’s dress code policy:

Is there a dress code at the resort?

Tasteful attire is always encouraged at all Wyndham Resorts. We encourage beachwear for the pool and beach. Shoes are required for all restaurants including our casual Mangrove Restaurant for lunch. We recommend Resort Casual dress in all other areas. Manor House and Tuscany fine dining in the evening requires collared shirts and slacks or dress shorts. The Manor House and Tuscany Restaurant do not allow flip flops, tank tops, etc.

The following three questions immediately came to my head:

• What exactly is “Resort Casual?” Does Emily Post cover this in her book? Is that like wearing khakis but with brighter colors? Should I dress like I’m going to work, but just leave my shirt more unbuttoned? Can I get away with “Country Club Comfy?”

• Let me get this straight: Fine dining requires either slacks or dress shorts? Does this exclude nice jeans or non-slack pants? What happens if I’m not sure what a slack is, or am unaware whether I own slacks to begin with. What about dress shorts? Are these the types of shorts one would wear to a wedding or funeral, rather than those typically worn to the beach? And if so, where does one buy dress shorts? Which haute couture designer focuses on this article of clothing?

• Beachwear for the pool and beach is encouraged? Does this mean nudity is simply frowned upon? What if I want to don my new winter coat and/or slacks, will Wyndham 86 me from beach if I do?

San Francisco to Beijing for $663: Korean Air is offering this and other great deals to Asia from all over the U.S. Must purchase tickets by January 15th. Nothing to make fun of there.

  1. I just got round-trip tix from Houston to Santander, Spain for $573 on Iberia. Inexplicably, it cost nothing to add the Madrid->Santander leg.

If you're heading to Spain, Iberia seems to have some deals.
