Are You A Travel Hesitater?

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Well, the same goes for travel, right? We’re all in the same boat. We’re all travelers. So why is there that . . . moment? The indecision when you circle the “purchase” button on your computer instead of diving in with both feet. Perhaps it’s the logistics (who will take care of the dog?), or the money (time to open a trip fund), or the fear of being alone (lonely), or are you just . . . dare I say . . . scared?

Suzy Guese, was plagued with a case of travel hesitation, and tackles the subject on her blog. Some people face their hesitation by choosing the same destination year after year. But is that traveling, or just avoiding the problem? Per Suzy:

No doubt, we hesitate because of change, reluctant but willing all at the same time. Most of all, I think we hesitate to keep travel interesting. Travel might wind up to be a big snooze if we didn’t anticipate it with a little nervousness, worry, uncertainty and, of course, hesitation. Part of that worry is what makes those destinations so worthwhile.

Yeah, there are often worries that surround leaving your personal world for a period of time and not knowing what you will face on the road. I thought life was about getting comfortable — in your apartment, your work, your finances. What’s the point in regressing into a life you’ve spent striving to overcome?

What Suzy suggests, is that travel brings back the mystery we need in life. We seek travel because it is unknown. I’m willing to suggest the word, “freeing.” So hesitate away and let the uncertainty creep in. Just don’t forget to appreciate it — it’s one of the very things we seek.
