Your Guide To Dodging The G20

Friday, June 25, 2010

Yesterday there was tension in the air. Riding around downtown Toronto, doing some errands, it was clear that drivers and transit-drivers seemed to be in a foul mood. Maybe it’s the increased police presence or the closure of the city’s businesses, but the car-honks and streetcar-dinging were just the minor displays of frustration and irritation.

A few weeks ago, a group of us were talking about the approaching summit, fantasizing about far-off places to escape to: cottages, different cities, neighborhoods and parks outside the downtown core. Even though the excitement may attract some, it’s nice to read about places to go if you want to avoid the chaos.

This week The Toronto Star highlights some choices like cottage country — Huntsville — and other cities that are within proximity — Quebec City and New York — but it’s nice to get random suggestions, like Switzerland or Texas. I would never have thought to venture to a small-fishing town called Ascona, whose museum is hosting a little bit of “art and anarchy.”

For those that are trapped in the city but still want to escape, inviting friends over or taking a nap is a good way to get the heck outta Dodge. As for me? I’m hitting the road. See you in New York City.
