Check Out New York City’s Best Rooftop Bars

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

I recently had a friend visiting me here in New York City who actually said, “It is so hot here, it’s like Africa!” Given that she spent over four years living in the tropical climate of northern Mozambique, it’d be hard to call her out for exaggerating. Actually, the truth is, New York City has been hot this month. In fact, the month of July is heading for the record books as the hottest July on record. And if you want to put this in perspective, this means it has basically been hotter here than if you had traveled to Nairobi, Miami or Cairo this month — hotter than if you had actually gone to Africa!

Despite the heat, if there’s one thing New Yorkers love doing, it’s drinking outside. Makes sense, given the cocoon-like size of most people’s apartments, as well as the (relatively) long winter. Plus, let’s face it, how many other cities offer as good of views while sipping drinks, especially if it’s from the environs of a rooftop bar, of which many new ones have opened within the last year, as the LA Times recently explored.

Not surprisingly, many of the best rooftop bars around the city are part of hotels (not many bar owners have the luxury of owning an entire skyscraper), such as the 3,000-square-foot Press Lounge, located at the hotel, Ink48 in Hell’s Kitchen, with its reflecting pool and spectacular view of Midtown; and Upstairs, the  rooftop bar at the Kimberly Hotel in Midtown. With it’s Central Park-esque design, the bar is described by the hotel  as “somewhere between a luxe midtown cocktail bar and your backyard.” Is that so? My backyard has an overgrown fig tree and a neighbor that likes to yell at me while he prunes his bushes with his shirt off. Can you offer me that Kimberly Hotel?
