2010 In Review: The Expeditioner Editor Matt Stabile’s Picks, Tips, & 2011 Travel Predictions

Tuesday, December 28, 2010

We would like to thank each and every one of our The Expeditioner readers for yet another great year in the world of travel! It’s always a great time to reflect on it all. Let’s see . . .  Luke fell in love, Jon married his love, Brit returned home, Matt tackled SE Asia, we got correspondents at the Olympics and the World Cup, Maria joined us to offset the number of bearded writers, and the publishing of The Expeditioner’s Guide to the World — yeah, there’s a lot to be thankful for around these parts. Now only for those pesky New Year’s resolutions . . .

For our final installment of “The Expeditioner’s 2010 In Review,” our fearless leader drops some knowledge bombs we all should take note of: how to combat jet lag, the dethroning of Eat, Pray Love, and a possible explanation of how the American hikers were led off course in Iran.  Capt’n Matt, you have the floor:

Where Did You Travel in 2010?

Montreal, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan

Any Possible Trips for You in 2011?

Who knows? But as far as that vague, general moving target that are the future destinations that I’d like to see before I die, and which could also possibly occur in 2011, those would have to be: Brazil, Spain, Lebanon/Jordan, Egypt, India.

What Yoda-Like Bits Of Wisdom Have You Learned Along the Way?

Jetlag, as a Brit might say — or they would say in my head if I were to imagine a Brit saying it — is a nasty little bugger. To combat it, try not to go out all night promptly upon arriving somewhere where your body clock is at 8 a.m.; drink lots of fluids — if, for no other reason, than this seems to be a cure-all for everything; and try to adjust your sleep pattern as quickly as possible, even if this means you find yourself up at 3:30 a.m. with nothing to do other than to go for a really early morning walk.

Any Travel-Related Predictions, Awesome New Destinations, Or  Events That May Be on Your Radar for the Upcoming Year?

Hmm, I have a couple of predictions. I predict that The Expeditioner’s Guide to the World surpasses Eat, Pray, Love in units shipped (and, oddly enough, Julia Roberts plays my, Jon’s, and Luke’s role in the film version); the Euro depreciates enough where an American can afford to upgrade to a private hostel room from a bunk; and WikiLeaks reveals the American hikers in Iran were led astray not by faulty directions from a local, but rather from a nefarious volume of a Rick Steves guidebook.
