American Airlines announced today that it would be filing for Chapter 11 reorganization in federal bankruptcy court in New York to restructure the company’s debt and costs (which many believe to be code for adjusting their historically generous pensions and union contracts). So what does this mean for you, American Airlines ticket holder?

American sent out a meesage to its frequent fliers this afternoon assuring them that things will be business as usual, meaning reservations and frequent flier miles will be maintained, employees will still get paid, and airplanes will not be jettisoned from the sky into burning projectiles of wreckage upon the citizenry below, all positive news from their announcement.

From their e-mail:

American is honoring all tickets and reservations as usual, and making normal refunds and exchanges. And, we intend to maintain a strong presence in domestic and international markets. As we and all airlines routinely do, we will continue to evaluate our operations and service, assuring that our network is as efficient and productive as possible. Additionally, relationships with our oneworld Alliance and other codeshare partners are continuing to provide you with opportunities to earn and redeem miles for travel to hundreds of destinations worldwide, and we are honoring all tickets and reservations for travel on our partner airlines as usual.
