Exclusive Video Of The Final Minutes Of The Costa Concordia [Video]

Friday, February 10, 2012

The first documentary about the sinking of the Costa Concordia, featuring video shot by passengers themselves as they attempt to flee the ship, airs this Sunday, February 12 at 7 p.m. on the Nat Geo Channel.

The above clip shows passengers as they confusedly wait then rush forward to board the lifeboats as workers instruct them to head to their respective “muster” stations — a term one confused passenger admits not knowing the meaning. (Admittedly, I had no idea either.  If I were instructed to report to one, I’d probably head to the condiment bar in the ship’s dining hall.)

If you were wondering, a muster station is a nautical term for an area where people report to be counted and accounted for (often for emergency purposes). As Wikipedia points out, in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, all passenger ships must conduct muster drills within 24 hours of departure. Perhaps the Convention should require that ships explain what a muster is before conducting muster drills?
