Is The Best Hostel In Spain In Cordoba?

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Bed&Be, Cordoba

What makes a good hostel? Just ask Jose Fabra Garrido, proud proprietor of the newly opened Bed & Be in Cordoba, Andalucia, because he has nailed it. Absolutely.

Are there more aesthetically impressive buildings in the world? Yes. Are there more dramatic locations? Certainly. But traveler Jose has managed to achieve something many hosts claim but is, in my experience, incredibly rare: He has succeeded in creating a home away from home.

Since it opened its doors in March of this year, Bed & Be has notched up an impressive 98% on HostelWorld.com. From the moment of arrival, it is not hard to see why. The eclectic mix of guests agreed that, especially in terms of welcome, this was the best place they had ever stayed. Definitely in Spain, and possibly the world.

So, while The Expeditioner is not usually in the business of accommodation reviews, in this case, an exception has to be made. This an oasis of intelligent design and effortless comfort over four floors, with the uppermost boasting a spacious — if swelteringly hot — roof terrace.

The secret as to why this is such a memorable place to stay lies not in the high-ceilinged rooms, juicy tomatoes and oranges  served at the breakfast table, nor infinite quirky design features, or even the value for money, but with the host himself.

As the only employee, Jose takes responsibility for every aspect of the running of the hostel. This seems to include everything from making the beds to introducing visitors to his friends and showing them what the town has to offer in the way of nightlife. He even popped out to buy a cheeky jar of Nutella upon request.

Always friendly and available for a chat, this chap has the gift of the gab and unrivaled aptitude for creating a welcome, and without an inkling of sleeze or suggestion.

If you are considering starting a hostel of your own, forget literature on how to make a go of it in the hospitality sector and skip online seminars. Instead, a visit to number 22, Calle de Jose Cruz Conde, Cordoba  is highly recommended.
