Vote For Your Favorite Mini-Saga!
The Olympics may be over, but here at The Expeditioner things are just beginning to heat up as the Mini-Sagas are in. The contest is officially closed to entries, but now you get to do something your Sunday school teacher told you never to do: judge people. (I suspect this isn’t the first time you’ve deviated from a Sunday school precept.) Because you, dear reader, get to decide which bite-sized story, with their 50 carefully chosen words, is the winner of a Scottevest that will allow them to “dress like a traveler, not a tourist.” ($125 value).
All of the stories below have been posted to the The Expeditioner’s Facebook page. Whichever one receives the most “Likes” over the next week will be hitting the road in style in their new Scottevest.
Thanks to everyone who entered this contest, and enjoy crunching on these bite-sized tales.

“Russian Attack”
by Chris Mathew
A man attacked me in a Russian liquor store. He looked angry, as Russians do, and was yelling. He pushed me hard in the chest with a beer until I grabbed it. Then he left. “He was welcoming you to Russia. Drink that and relax a little!” my translator laughed.
“Magnetic Island”
by Victoria Lawson
The water glistened in the sunlight as the ferry pulled in to “paradise port.” I hopped on a bus to Australia’s only real “beach hostel,” excellent, just in time for the Full Moon Party! Music pumping, buckets flowing, lights flashing, backpackers dancing ’til sunrise. Magnetic by name . . . Magnetic by nature . . .
“Base Camp Bachelor Party”
by Marie Lisa Jose
You do know you shouldn’t smoke or drink while on the base camp trek, right? Sipping his whiskey in defiance he retorts “I am aiming for a different kind of high.”He pauses, then blurts out “I am getting married two days after I return. This is my bachelor party.”
“Road Trip in India”
by Alexa Hart
Hotel in India screwed us on a train ride,
So we hired a driver and nearly died.
Unpaved roads, crazy driving, and rocking side to side.Three flat tires — two replaced and one repaired,
With a rag in the gap while everyone stared.
No other road trip can be compared!
“Cross-Country Adventure by Train”
by Sarah Miro
Clanking along endless cornfield backdrops, (“I-need-a-break — I-need-a-break . . .”), the weary engine yelped and collapsed on its tracks — again. We sighed collectively, watching enviously as they pedaled, in tandem, across the coach’s window, and vanished into the pleated curtain. The train heaved contemplating the miles ahead.
“Crash”
by Brandon Suarez
My little brother crashed the motobike on a bridge near Hue, Vietnam. I drove him back to the city on the back of my rented Honda Wave. He told me he loved me as we rode next to the Perfume River, the scent of charcoal in the cooling summer breeze.
