The online travel community has been abuzz with the recent announcement of a new, little-known site that connects the millions of people around the world itching to donate their hard-earned money so you can go on vacation. Sound a little improbable? It probably is.
Not much is known at this point about the “crowd-funded travels” site Trevolta, which bills itself as a site where you can “Plan an extraordinary trip and get it funded by inspired people, amazed friends and generous sponsors.” Surprisingly, the prospect of having complete strangers pony up their money for your travel costs is an extremely attractive concept for many people, so much so that according to the signup page, 105,844 people have signed up in the past 24 hours (October 17-18) to get a piece of the travel funding pie.
Of course you could go the old-fashioned route and start a crowdfunding campaign on a site like Kickstarter or GoFundMe, but then, annoyingly enough, you’d likely have to come up with some sort of “angle” for your trip, like having an incurable disease, or raising money to help cure cancer. Who has time for that when you have a trip to go on?
In the meantime, while you wait your turn for the travel funding spigot to be turned on, you can check out the “Travel and Adventure” section of GoFundMe for some ideas on setting up your own funded trip. You’re on your own for charitable causes.
