Lake Malawi: A Little Bit Of The Caribbean In The Heart Of Africa
Looking for somewhere in the middle of Africa that has a laid-back, surfer attitude with the “vibrancy of the Caribbean” and “where travelers come for two days and stay for a week?” Then head to Lake Malawi, Africa’s third-largest (and the world’s ninth-largest) lake. Located directly between Mozambique, Tanzania and Malawi, this placid lake is almost made for navigating via kayak along its shoreline where you can visit its many unique villages and fishing ports (as experienced in this article from the Sydney Morning Herald).
Nkhata Bay, the popular backpacker hangout and bustling fishing port about 3/5 of the way up the lake, is, as Lonely Planet describes, “Caribbeanesque,” with its scenic vistas and opportunities for snorkeling. And you thought you were going to spend your days in Africa looking for big game.
