Everything here should be read and agreed to by signature by every traveller before they hostel anywhere. You’d think it’s common sense but I have been VERY surprised at some points in how absent minded people can be.

Hand-in-hand with the packing rule, is not to individually wrap everything in grocery bags – nothing more irritating than the crinkle of bags in the middle of the night … you know who I'm talking about :)

Great article, I love the fact that you denounce extreme PDA, for real "get a room". Another topic, I may have missed…….what about eating in the middle of the night? sometimes its so unavoidable. try to crunch softly, i suppose & have done……hahaha, but seriously your the pro at this!

Great article. Lots of hard learned tips. I might add that just because you think you have found an out of the way spot in a hostel, there just might be a ccv camera there. Just get a private room. The more people know what not to do the better of we all will be.

There was a rather enthusiastic snorer in my dorm in Johannesburg who after one night became notorious throughout the hostel as the loudest snorer they'd have ever heard. People were actually sneaking in during the middle of the night just to hear her. Naturally she was the bunk next to me, which is why my #1 rule for staying in a hostel is to always bring earplugs.

But seriously, I've made some great friends and have nothing but good memories from staying in hostels everywhere I've traveled. Hopefully these tips will help make sure it stays that way.

I laughed out loud because I have experienced some things here multiple times at hostels on my round the world (RTW) trip. Snoring was a big one. No ant sandwiches. No one had a proper alarm clock but cell phones were used as alarms and are just as annoying.

All in all I still love hostels. That snorer might turn out to be a great friend. And the person who ate your sandwich just might make up for it later.
