The weeks I spent in Beijing and the surrounding countryside was full of "holy crap, you eat that?" and "holy crap, that was amazing to eat." Your comment also reminds me of the amazing hutong neighborhoods I spent time getting lost in. Great culture, great food, just a great overall experience. Thanks for sharing.

You cannot beat fresh bird on the grill. I think it's one of the few places where you can choose your food fresh (I mean alive), from fish to baby birds, cooked on the streets of Nanning, Beijing, & Guilin. Not only can you get food on the street (not just meat), but its the way of life for many of the citizens of China, especially in the Hutongs. You must of seen lots of street food in Taiwan?? I think the Chinese think if you can cook it in the kitchen you can cook it out in the street (lots of homes don't have kitchens/cooking facilities). Some of the best food I've eaten has been in the streets. Some of the most inventive cooking/grilling pots/pans, bbqs were seen in the streets.
