They always rented vacation homes or apartments when we traveled, so when I started traveling on my own staying in a hotel was a novel experience. Now that I've done the 'hotel thing' though, I'd much rather find an apartment, cottage or couchsurfing host. Staying outside of a hotel makes it a lot easier to live more like a local and get away from any main touristy areas.
