Amused at the first few paragraphs. Oh yes, Mr Irving certainly had it much more comfortable than the mortal self today :). I had prebooked the tickets for 4 of us from the website http://www.ticketmaster.es. We got to Granada at 3.30 pm and discovered that the “ATM Machine” of the Caixa Bank, where we could collect our tickets, wasn’t working and the bank was closed for Siesta! Errrrgh Adrenalin shooted up and down and accordingly my “excitement”. At 4 p.m. the bank opened, after a few language miscommunications, the bank person came out and “printed” out the tickets for me (with an old inkjet printer system in the ATM!) and as we had booked 3 different tours for all of us that made 3 x 4 tickets….At 5.00p.m. was our entrance time for the first Nasride palace visit – my Adrenalin got down, once we were inside!! Why one can’t print the tickets with the online purchase before hand, I don’t understand! It is the same at the Burj al Khalifa (Dubai), however even a bit more irritating, as you have to take your evidence of purchase to the counter (no avoiding of queues, but another queue) and then you get your definite tickets!

Back to Alhambra: all the excitement was worth it!

Don't you just love travelling! All that noise and confusion and having to go with the flow even when blatantly ignored – and finding that the hassle was worth it. Sounds like visiting it at night time is far more atmospheric and meaningful than during the day.

In reply to Anne Sigmon. Yes it feels illicit somehow, a special privilege, to walk around there at night. You just have to mentally block out the other 399 people. In fairness to the custodians the way they manage the flow of people makes that quite easy at times.

Missed out on the Lorca museum will have to get it next time. Sounds like you had a textbook experience! We were lucky with crowds because we were off season – the story above was written about a previous trip a good few months ago now. Where I am now, in Tarifa, we'd be about 3.5 hours away, or longer by public transport, which is quite a distance, Won't stop us going back this November though.__Wth the caveat that I will probably change my mind at some point, Granada is my favourite city in Europe.

Hi Robin, I share your pain. It took us 4 attempts to get in even when queuing for hours from 8am. And on the penultimate attempt I mamanged to lose my bleeding ticket en route…

Was pretty special though, but crowded, especially at night. had a drink in the Parador Hotel one night just next door, beautiful spot.

Ho far are you then? I loved Granada, I have to say. Stayed in the Albayzin, so atmospheric. Did you go to the Lorca Museum too? Great post.
