I usually opt for travel packages through Thomas Cook India which give me good deals. I had booked Thailand tour package last year with my friends and had an experience of a lifetime. :)
You can check among the various tour packages from Thomas Cook India online at: http://www.thomascook.in/tcportal/international-holidays/group-holidays/Thailand-holiday-packages?destination=Thailand

Great picture of the squat toilet on the link —  I feel like someone should start a Tumble blog with that theme.

But now that I’ve seen how much cheaper it can be done without the guided tour, I’d never do it again.

great tips! I’ve got a similar article on my blog at … http://sotcblog.com/2011/07/27/backpacking-lessons-ive-learned-the-hard-way/

Good point, and as Stephen pointed out, if you need any replacements or alternatives, there are plenty of competing guides sold on the street.

I have to add a caveat to your guide book suggestion: sometimes Lonely Planet is the best because they’ve been around forever, and have had many editions of their country guides. We used a Moon guide for Fiji and it was totally inaccurate and lacking basic info, since it was the first or second edition. I typically get a Lonely Planet for the maps and basic country info, then make sure not to stay at the hotels listed but to check nearby hotels. That way you aren’t in an overpriced, backpacker flop house :)
