I haven't been on the Rhone yet, but it sounds like a great destination. The only cruise I've taken in France so far was a Paris to Normandy river cruise on the Seine. France is such a beautiful, old country with a lot of history--and their wines aren't half bad either, haha. I should really go back and go on more cruises there someday. Hopefully next year. My calendar's full for this year. I got other cruises booked. Oh well.

Well, itineraries can be good and bad. The good part about this type of trip is that at the end of the day, you’ve paid for it, so you can do as little or as much as you want with whomever you want. In other words, if you feel like exploring on your own, eating dinner out, etc…, you can do it. They just tell you what time the boat leaves and what time you should be back if you want a ride further upriver (and even then, if you miss it, you can just get a ride to the next stop — no big deal).

All in all, group travel always slows things down, but I thought the guides and what they showed us were worth it.

As someone who starts to twitch at the thought of being confined on a boat for longer than a day, your write-up made me soften to a cruise just a bit. I’d be interested to know if you ever felt trapped by the itinerary or structured activities. The thought of truffle-infused butter on bread has me drooling, so thank you!
