Learning even a few words in the native tongue shows you put forth some effort, endearing you to locals. My wife and I are pretty fluent Spanish speakers so when we visit Central or South American countries it feels good to speak to locals without them knowing English at all. Cool way to connect with people too as you definitely see a different country when you can chat casually with locals; they open up more, feeling comfortable speaking in their native tongue.
