Great points Matt! And not rocket science either! I quote my new Frankfurt airport travel base as an example of terrible planning for passenger screening, immensely long walks to gates(20mins brisk walk in some cases), outrageously expensive bottled water prices(5 euros for 75cl), chaotic boarding procedures(even with assigned seating) and gawd awful transportation/amenity signage (I never know exactly where I am going). They have pumped immense amounts of money into the airport of late, and yet, 99% of the time, I get to my gate in a bad mood to start a long haul flight. Really, I’m going to be alot more pleasant and buy alot more if I feel there is more concern paid to my customer experience from the minute I set foot in the airport.

Ironically, the Megawide-GMR consortium just won the bid to build T2 of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines. This early, a lot of the Cebuanos don’t like the bidding outcome and even the design presented by the consortium. Seems like citizens who were batting for the Filinvest-Changi consortium, are at the mercy of the bidding process. I just hope Megawide-GMR considers passenger experience rather than mere profit.

Make airports less like malls. I am tired of walking miles to my gate because there is now 40 chain stores in between. Seriously I don’t need to arrive 2 hours early because you are forcing me to shop.

This is true Matt – I actually haven’t checked a bag (except when forced too) in a long time. Also unfortunately not all of these companies are in 2014 yet with the checking in online thing. Just 3 weeks ago on a code share flight with Aer Lingus and Air Canada, they wouldn’t let me check in online – its like the two airlines couldn’t talk to each other to figure out the technology to make it work. So then Cailin ended up standing in a gynormous line cursing under her breath.

I think another good thing would be to extend check-in times. A lot of domestic flights you can’t check in at the check-in counter until like 3 hours before the flight and some airlines don’t even have personnel at the check-in counter until that time. I think the earlier we can check in the less of a rush we will be in and we can enjoy some of the things listed above and we won’t be freaking out when the security line is huge.
