Carolyn: It’s true, Indians do love their phones, and they do love allowing them to ring for about 30 seconds before answering them so you can fully appreciate their ringtones. I’m still glad I left mine at home. I may invest in something cheap for the future for basic texting though, that would alleviate some issues. Anyways, my new Indian friends seemed to be content adding me as a friend on Facebook.

I had a great time Lisa. And there were very few times I missed having a phone (it would have been fun Instagraming some of the other sites, but I was already taking pictures/video as it was).

I’m starting to consider an iPad Mini though, I did find myself watching old episodes of Community late at night before going to sleep, and it’d be nice not to hassle around with booting up my netbook everytime I wanted to watch something (and to easily access wi-fi which seems to always be problematic with netbooks).

I did break our camera and video camera during that time. Travel can be hard on electronics! I do have to say I love Kindle for reading during trips–a pile of books in the backpack is a bit heavy and I love the dictionary feature on kindle. Hope your time in India was wonderful. Seems like most people love India as much as they hate it! Lisa

I spent six months there last year, and only had a very basic phone and most Indians I met laughed at it. Indians’ love for phones is almost as strong as their interest in foreigners, so as a phoneless white dude you will be an endless source of fascination. Even on my first trip there in 2009 I was surprised by how popular phones are. Villagers living in a bucket under a piece of corrugated iron would still have a phone. I upgraded my phone when I left India, but I wish I had taken a better one with me. Your new Indian friends will be very frustrated they can’t text you.
