Finding destination not overrun with fanny-packed tourists is getting harder by the day. After sharing Luke’s recent Paris Catacombs<\/a> post\u00a0with a friend of mine, his inner sissy erupted with, “dude, I would go the opposite way of that place.” That\u00a0led me to think: What better way to avoid tourists than to head to those places most others are afraid to go?<\/p>\n

A few searches online led me to listopia’s list of the 10 most scary and weird tourist\u00a0attractions in the world<\/a>. At first glance, yeah, there are a few that I would probably not visit. Then I began to realize the fascinating, albeit dark,\u00a0stories surrounding these destinations.<\/p>\n

We’ll start our own virtual Tour de Darkness by heading to the Sonora Witchcraft Market in Mexico City,\u00a0where locals go to buy dried hummingbirds and rattlesnake blood for “taming the luck.”\u00a0Also, people\u00a0seek the\u00a0market\u00a0to get their fortunes read. I’m not sure about that idea, seeing as you’re in the middle of a witchcraft market. I’m just saying . . .<\/p>\n

Next stop on the tour is the old Sicilian farmhouse of Aleister Crowley. It’s\u00a0full of dark, pagan wall-paintings and echos of past satanic orgies.\u00a0Rumor has it, Marilyn Manson recently befriended Aleister on Facebook.<\/p>\n

Continuing along, we find ourselves at Mary King’s Dead End, under\u00a0Old Town Edinburgh. Just opened to tourists, this underground lair is where 17th-century plague victims were locked up and left to die. And you thought your desk job was bad.<\/p>\n

Now, ladies and gentlemen,\u00a0for the final stop: Chernobyl.\u00a0\u00a0Yes, let’s take a\u00a0walk in the\u00a0hasty footprints left by those\u00a0lucky enough to flee the Chernobyl accident. In 1986, thousands scrambled from the\u00a0town of\u00a0Pripyat, Ukraine. Today you can visit the\u00a0ghostly, abandoned\u00a0exclusion zone for your very own tour of a nuclear winter (a town classroom is pictured above).<\/p>\n
