Surprisingly, skiing is a very popular sport Australia, and the country has lots of enjoyable ski fields. Check out these five for ideas next time you’re looking to hit the slopes down under.
1) Mount Hotham
Mount Hotham is a very popular ski destination for those who have purchased snowy mountains packages. Often referred to as “The Powder Capital of Australia,” Mount Hotham is a national resort that is so vast that it even has its own airport. There are slopes to interest everyone from beginners to those seeking more adventurous and daring runs. The wide range of restaurants, accommodation options, nightclubs and bars that the resort has to offer make Mount Hotham a great place to spend some time.
2) Thredbo
Thredbo is an exquisite ski resort located on Mount Kosciusko, the highest mountain in all of Australia. This resort, which has a lovely European feel to it, is loved for its steep descents and seemingly never-ending runs. There are over 50 runs and more than 480 hectares for skiers to enjoy. Australia’s longest ski run can also be found here. Thredbo is a member of the Snowy River Shire, and the fact that it is also a charming village plays a large role in attracting 700,000 visitors to it every year. Thredbo is also unique in that it is able to draw, and meet the needs of, visitors who are on a tighter budget.
3) Falls Creek
Falls Creek is located in Victoria, and is only open from mid-June until the first week of October. However, it does feature over 90 runs that have something to offer to not only beginner and intermediate skiers, but also advanced and expert skiers. Thankfully, there are 14 lifts to help skiers reach all the runs. Falls Creek also hosts the annual Kangaroo Hoppet, which is the internationally renowned cross-country race all serious skiers love. One thing that is really nice about Falls Creek is that practically the entire village is ski-in and ski-out, thus making it extremely easy and convenient to transition between the slopes and one’s lodging.
4) Mount Buller
Mount Buller is also located in Victoria, and it is only three hours away from Melbourne. This makes it the perfect ski destination for those who are just interested in a day trip. There are approximately 300 hectares of ski trails, as well as 25 lifts to transport skiers across this vast area. One of the highlights of Mount Buller is that is has one of the the most impressive on-snow hotels in all of Australia. The Grand Mercure Mt. Buller Chalet is simply stunning and it situated right in the center of all the action. There are, of course, other lodging options for those who are on a tighter budget or who want something more cozy.
5) Perisher
Perisher is one place avid skiers will not want to miss, as it is now Australia’s largest ski resort. There is a huge amount of diversity, as Perisher used to be four separate resorts. Spread across the resort’s 1,200 hectares, there are lots of lovely chalets and lodges available to stay in. Jindabyne is a popular place to find accommodation, as it is one of the only places which provides access to all of Perisher’s slopes.
