Because one can never get enough of cats on the internet, I present to you a travel video coming from Expeditioner reader Eric Testroete about the island of Tashirojima, Japan, otherwise known as “Cat Island.”

With a population of only about 100 residents, the island is home to six times that number in cats, or for those good at math, 600 cats.

As you can see in the above video, as soon as you step off the ferry, you are greeted by the island’s many furry inhabitants who make this island a popular draw for tourists. And it looks like the residents really play up their cat association: the toilets are outfitted with cat toilet dispensers, the docks are decorated with cat-themed buoys, and you can even stay in a guest house shaped like a cat.

Why so many cats in Tashirojima? It turns out, the island was a hub for silk production during the Edo Period, which meant that rodents were very interested in dining on the silkworms used to produce the silk. So the islanders bred a large population of cats to keep the mice in control, and today you can see their ancestors up close and personal.

If you thought Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo’s famous crosswalk, was crazy normally, wait until you see what it looks like on Halloween Night.

I shot this clip from the elevated subway station on Halloween night while I was in Tokyo around 9 p.m. My initial intention was to explore the neighborhood to see what it was like during the newly popular holiday. I never made it outside the station.

In this travel video travel guide to Malaysia, I travel to Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur, and to Terengganu, the country’s second-largest city.

I start off my trip by exploring Kenyir Lake, located just west of Terengganu, which is actually the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia (it’s the size of Singapore). I head to the far end of the lake by speedboat to go trekking into the hilly jungle where I come across a school of hungry fish waiting for eager tourists like myself to provide them with a cheap snack. I then head back on the lake to explore the many islands that call this lake home.

Next, I head back onto the water — this time to the ocean — to do a little squid jigging as part of the first annual Terengganu International Squid Jigging Fest. Squid jigging, for those of you that don’t know, is the act of fishing for squid by hand with a line and hook, something I have questionable skill doing.

Back on dry land, I explore the market in Terengganu, one of the best places to find fresh seafood in the entire country, and try some of the region’s favorite desserts and iced coffee.

For the second half of the video, I head east to the capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, where I — what else? — find some street food in the famous Chow Kit neighborhood, followed by a little more food in Kampung Baru, a sleeping Malay enclave flanked by the city’s downtown tower.

I then take the monorail (!) to explore the Petronas Towers and the KL Tower, two of the city’s most famous landmarks, followed by dinner in Jalan Alor, the city’s famed outdoor street food district.

Finally, it’s time for a little rest and relaxation back on the west coast of Malaysia at the island of Redang, one of the country’s most beautiful tropical islands, where I get to experience what beach life is like in Malaysia.

Amazingly, this is exactly what one Australian couple has set out to do. Comprised of Epiphany & Carl, the couple has set their ambitions high, and have so far been successful in their mission, making it through the U.S. and most of Europe thus far.

The above video comes from Madrid, Spain, where the couple interviews Beleida, a performer at Madrid’s flamenco bar, Cardamomo, who speaks of flamenco’s importance to the Spanish psyche.

Tavascan, in Catalonia, Spain, is a ski resort/national park where you can spend the weekend if you happen to live in nearby Barcelona and had a group of good-looking friends who dress well and prepare food much better than you can make. I’m pretty sure you can still go even if none of those things are true, but this looks like a far better way to visit, doesn’t it? I had a bagel from a street vendor this morning.

I have to say, the videos and images that I’ve seen coming out of Burning Man this year haven’t exactly blown me away or helped to relieve that nagging feeling I’ve been getting since at least last year that the event has officially jumped the shark.

Of course, coming from someone who has never been himself, I’m not in much of a position one way or the other to judge whether an event that I probably had only heard of about 5 years ago has departed from its original “coolness.” But there hasn’t been much I’ve seen or heard that has made me think otherwise during the post-Burning Man last few weeks.

However, this video from the always enjoyable and probably somewhat unhinged (in a good way) Ari Fararooy actually intrigued me and made me wish I had experienced the craziness myself. Click play and enjoy what Ari described as a week that “felt like a really trippy, lucid dream.”

Here’s a great video from Vimeo user HappyPapaya taken from his (her?) trip to Chugach State Park, the stunningly beautiful, 495,000-acre state park located just south of Anchorage, Alaska, along the coastline.

The westernmost boundary of the park is in the western foothills of the Chugach Mountain Range and, amazing, is a mere seven miles to the east of downtown Anchorage. The last time I checked, if you go seven miles from the downtown of pretty much any other major city in the U.S. you’re much more likely to run into a Panera than a brown bear. This, my friends, is Alaska.

It’s fair to say that not many journalists know more about what life is like in Iraq more than Paulien Bakker, who has traveled to the country 15 times during the last few years to cover the country’s recent tumultuous past, as well as to document the everyday lives of the Iraqis living there.

Her fascinating video short, “Hello Baghdad,” is a selection of narrative stories from Iraqis living in Baghdad far outside the constraints of the protected Green Zone. Paulien followed them in their lives during the last few years (2011-2014), and documented them via photography to help tell a story not often heard outside of the country.

To read the full photo essay, check out Bakker’s blog at Tumbler here.

I may not be a good dancer (scratch that: I’m a terrible dancer), but I can at least appreciate the art form, as well as the role it plays in the way cultures express themselves and have identified themselves throughout the years. Of course, those that can actually dance are probably the best people to explore this. Enter Brittany Pierce, host of the new dance-themed travel show Rhythm Abroad whom I recently had the opportunity to speak with (she’s actually both host and Executive Producer) and ask a few questions.

Available on pubic television stations throughout the U.S., each episode features Brittany in such locations as Tahiti, Spain, Alberta and Switzerland, hitting the dance floor (or, you know, outside somewhere) with the locals, and seeking to explore each culture through traditional dance and native customs of people around the world. Brittany also heads off the dance floor in each episode to chat with local musicians and hang with the locals as they savor the food and enjoy the thrills of a unique activity.

“What makes this show so relatable is it encourages people to dive right in and participate in a culture instead of observing from afar,” says Pierce. “I’m not a professional dancer, but I love a great beat and that’s all one needs: to feel the beat.”

Brittany is a veteran in front of the television camera. Besides being a child actor, in college she studied journalism and worked in TV news before following her real passion: travel.

Brittany Pierce

1) Why explore travel through the lens of dance versus something like food or music? What makes dance unique to each culture, or is it all part of a larger package of a destination’s culture?

It all started when I took my first international trip to Nicaragua. Along with a couple of other travel mates, we decided to check out a local club. We were the only Americans in the club. A guy asked me to dance in his broken English and I accepted in my broken Spanish. It was there on the dance floor that I truly felt like I had been invited to share in the Nicaraguan culture.

Even without being able to speak to each other in the same language, we were still able to connect with each other even if just for a few minutes out on the dance floor. Dance and music are the universal languages. They can help us to understand and participate in a culture without the need for a common language.

2) What were you doing before this? Do you have a dance background?

I worked in television news as a producer and reporter. I also took to teaching for awhile, including high school and elementary school. However, travel always tickled my heart the most, so I set out to marry my love of television production and travel together, which led to the birth of Rhythm Abroad with Brittany Pierce. I guess in some ways I am still able to educate or introduce people to new experiences and world cultures with Rhythm Abroad.

Brittany Pierce2

3) How can I watch the show and keep updated with new episodes?

You can go to Rhythmabroad.com/stations for a list of PBS and other public television stations that are airing Rhythm Abroad. You can also do a simple title search on your television to see if Rhythm Abroad is carried on any station offered by your cable provider. If it’s not carried by your local PBS station, contact them and let them know that you would like to see it added to their programming schedule!

4) Now that you’ve visited a number of places, was there a particular culture or destination that was your favorite in terms of dance?

I would have to say Spain. There is so much to learn about Flamenco and it is an art that can’t be learned in one visit. I wish I would have had more time to learn more moves. It’s such a powerful and passionate dance. Even just being a spectator of a really good Flamenco performance or show is worth the visit to Sevilla.

5) What’s next for you? Do you plan on pushing the show to new formats or expanding the brand out to new areas?

Next steps include creating a really engaged Rhythm Abroad community and working on bringing viewers a great Season 2.

Shot by Mikai Danger Karl, the video was shot during his recent trip to the country in April, 2014, and features some incredible images of the country’s landscape, along with stunning portraits of Afghans who, if you asked, probably have a lifetime of stories to tell about their lives.

In honor of the World Cup wrapping up this weekend, I thought I’d feature this amazing compilation travel video from Brazil (as if the seemingly never-ending parade of enviable panoramic shots of Copacabana Beach and aerial views from Christ the Redeemer that have blanketed the airwaves recently haven’t already caused every sane person who hasn’t been to Brazil to scramble to their computer to check airfare prices to the country).

Made by videographer Tom Pinsard, this beautiful video was shot while Tom and his girlfriend were in Brazil for two weeks during the World Cup (they were wrapping up a six-month trip around Asia and South America).

Amazing footage as it is, unfortunately for us (and, well, Tom), one of his cameras was stolen while in Brazil, so he had to make do with the video he had already captured.

For those wondering, the video was shot using a combination of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II and GoPro 3.

In this travel video tour of Portland, Oregon, I travel to Portland, one of the most unique cities in the United States.

I started my trip off by hopping off a plane and then immediately hopping onto a bus. But not just any bus, a bus operated by Brewvana Brewery Tours, the mostly women-run craft beer brewery tour company. Portland, or know as Beervana to some, is home to 55 breweries within its borders, and is truly a beer-lover’s paradise. On my tour we made stops at Rogue Ales & Spirits, Laurelwood Pubic House & Brewery, Widmer Brothers Brewery and Sidecar Bar, where I had the chance to sit down over a pint with the founder and owner of Brewvana, Ashley Rose Salvitti.

While in Portland, I stayed at the Tiny House Hotel, a hotel made up of, you guessed it, tiny houses. In the next portion of my video guide I give a tour of my “crib” to show what it’s like to live and stay in a tiny house.

Then, in an effort to get a chance to experience the famed brunch scene in Portland, I stopped in at The Tin Shed Garden Cafe, located down the street from where I was staying in the New Alberta Arts District.

In the interest of learning more about food, I headed to the downtown location of the Portland Farmers Market, located in a beautiful stretch of downtown Portland. Here, I got a tour of the grounds with Mona Johnson, then had the opportunity to meet up with some of the vendors, including Matt Choi of Choi’s Kimchi Company, and famed chef and artisanal pickle impresario, David Barber of Picklopolis and Bingo! Sandwiches.

In need of a little peace and serenity, I then visited the Lan Su Chinese Garden, a peaceful and beautiful oasis in an otherwise busy and hectic part of downtown.

When visiting Portland, there’s no reason to spend all your time in the city, especially with so much to do outside the city limits. The next day I took a road trip with local Matthew Domingo to explore the Columbia River Gorge and the numerous trails and waterfalls just off the road you can check out.

Then, to wrap things up, we stopped in at Hood River Organic near the riverside town of Hood River, an organic orchard and farm run by East Coast ex-pat Dan Thall, who gave us a tour of his land. Once the day ended we then headed out to happy hour at Solera Brewery in the imposing shadow of Mount Hood and then into town for a dinner featuring mushroom pizza with mushrooms Dan had grown and recently delivered to the restaurant.

Ahhh, Iceland in March, does it get any better than that?

Well, no, not really. And though Iceland may not come out on top of most lists for favorite places to jet off to for spring break, the island nation in the North Atlantic is actually an amazing place to visit any time of the year, especially given the fact that when you fly Icelandair you can have a layover there for up to seven days for no additional cost.

This great video comes from Dresden-based Janis Brod, who shot this beautiful video (with a Nikon D800) while in Iceland for two weeks in March, 2014. Featuring breathtaking images of volcanic activity, pristine waterfalls, the Northern Lights, Scandinavian horses, Game of Thrones-like vistas, and an unrivaled view of the winter night sky like no other, if this video doesn’t get you excited for travel to Iceland, nothing will.

And according to Shazam, the song playing in the background is from the artist Nora, which sounds suspiciously like Sigur Rós, which is probably based upon the fact they are the only other band I’ve heard sing in Icelandic (I’m only familiar with Bjork’s English-language oeuvre).

When I was recently in Portland, Oregon, I had the opportunity to take a craft beer tour with Brewvana, the predominantly women-led beer tour company that features decked-out green-and-white converted school buses (Angel and Rosie), edible stomach-hardening pretzel necklaces and insight from some of the more knowledgeable female beer connoisseurs in the city (though they have recently been adding some Y chromosomes to the team), which is saying something in Portland, a town that boasts 74 craft breweries in its metro area. And, yes, given the above, when Brewvana’s buses pull up and its customers roll out the front doors, everyone around takes notice.

Though they offer a number of different tours throughout the week, my particular “Friday Behind The Scenes Tour” was led by the knowledgable and personable Margot Ripley — a Portland native whom I randomly ran into while hiking in the Columbia River Gorge two days later — and featured stops at some of the more well-known breweries in the city, including Buckman Brewery, Laurelwood Public House and Brewery, Widmer Brother Brewery and Upright Brewery. Needless to say, the tour was a welcome introduction to a city that I had been in for less than 90 minutes before tasting my first brew.

Other than the obvious beer tastings at each stop, we were also lectured on the ins and outs of the brewing process, as well as given the opportunity to meet and ask questions from representatives of some of the brewers at each stop. At Laurelwood, owner and brewmaster Mike DeKalb welcomed us into the back of the house to observe the brewing process close-up, which involved them getting their seasonal Green Elephant IPA ready for imbibing (mellow malt character, big hoppy overtones).

Brewvana Team Picture

Not only was the experience uniquely “Portland,” but I also got to learn a lot about the massively successful local beer scene, meet some great people who all share a love of good beer, and also catch up with one of my favorite young entrepreneurs in the world, Brewvana’s owner and founder, Ashley Rose Salvitti, whom I had the pleasure of meeting initially here in New York.

The above video from Portland-based videographer Mike Vraneza features Ashley, the brains behind the entire operation, as she goes about her normal work day. Salvitti, who is from Upstate New York by way of North Carolina where she went to school and obtained degrees in Art and Psychology, also recounts the story of how she started a business of touring breweries, something she knew little about at the time she started the tour company.

As anyone that’s spent a few minutes with Ashley knows, her enthusiasm and dedication is contagious, and if you don’t want to drop everything and start helping to spread the gospel about Brewvana or pitching in to help fix the bus when it breaks down (which it has been known to do, but not so much anymore — don’t worry), then something’s seriously wrong with you.

Of course, as she hilariously explains in the video, lack of experience or lots of capital didn’t stop her, and when life handed her a faulty transmission one heavily scheduled weekend, she made a kegger and borrowed a van to keep the tours going.

Salvitti’s story, like many people’s in Portland, is one that is unique to a city that has an incredible ability to inspire people to pursue their dreams, to think differently and to keep going when other people say something can’t be done — common themes you hear time after time from entrepreneurs all over Stumptown who have decided to strike out and start businesses as varied as manufacturing artisanal chocolate to selling vegan dog shampoo.

Next time you’re in Portland, which is hopefully soon, be sure to block off some time for a Brewvana tour for what will likely be one of the highlights of your trip. You’ll probably walk away from it with a newfound appreciation for the city’s craft beer scene and the people behind it. And at the very least, you’ll walk away with a few great beers in your stomach, a great way to experience any city, but especially Portland.

Life on a boat, does life get any sweeter than that?

I recently came across this great short documentary about Canadian sailor/expat/dropout David Welsford called “Twenty Eight Feet: life on a little wooden boat,” which takes a look at Welsford’s decision to give up the luxuries of land in search for happiness and adventure on a 50-year-old wooden boat he restored from a scrap heap.

The film, from director and cinematographer Kevin A. Fraser, has been making the rounds on the film festival circuit, including the Maui Film Festival and the Atlantic Film Festival.

Obviously, Welsford has a unique view on money and people’s relationship with it, and his thoughts made for my favorite quote of the movie: “I think I understand money, in my way of understanding money, which is, once you figure out to make enough, then go do the things the may you happy.”
